THE LEGEND OF THE DISCOVERY

There is a popular Ethiopian legend wherein coffee is discovered by a goat herder named Kaldi. The story says the herder found his goats frolicking and full of energy after eating the red fruit of the coffee shrub. Kaldi tried the fruit for himself and had a similar reaction. Thus the stimulating properties of the coffee bean were revealed and greatness follows.

5 Quick Coffee Facts

1.)  The modern version of roasted coffee originated in Arabia during the 13th century,

2.)  In 1616, the Dutch founded the first European-owned coffee estate in Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, then Java in 1696.

3.)  The drink wasn’t really popular in America until the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when making the switch from tea to coffee became something of a patriotic duty.

4.)  In the 1960s, a certain awareness for specialty coffee started to grow, inspiring the opening of the first Starbucks in Seattle in 1971.

5.)   After coffee beans are decaffeinated, several coffee manufacturers sell the caffeine to soda and pharmaceutical companies.

Celebrate National Popcorn Day

Celebrate National Popcorn Day

Celebrate National Popcorn Day

Celebrate National Popcorn Day annually observed on January 19th with a short history of popcorn followed by an infographic with 7 fun facts about popcorn!

Popcorn becomes a “pop-ular!” snack!

Popcorn started becoming popular in the United States in the middle 1800s. It wasn’t until Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, developed a machine for popping corn with steam.

The convenient savoury snack became more abundantly poppable and  by 1900 he had horse-drawn popcorn wagons going through the streets of Chicago.

“Buy Me Some Peanuts & Cracker Jacks…”

At about the same time, Louise Ruckheim added peanuts and molasses to popcorn to bring Cracker Jack to the world.  The national anthem of baseball was born in 1908 when Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote Take Me out to the Ballgame. From that point onward, popcorn, specifically, Cracker Jack, became forever married to the game.

Popcorn And A Movie?

Popcorn has another romance that may have had a slow start but eventually took off. Today, who can imagine going to the movies without getting a box of buttered popcorn?

While popcorn itself was an economical choice for snack food, the expense of installing a machine and venting the building properly didn’t seem worth the effort.  If it weren’t for Glen W. Dickson, we would be purchasing our popcorn from a vendor on the street before taking in the show. Dickson put in the effort and expense of placing machines inside his theatres. After realizing how quickly he recouped his costs, other theatre owners followed suit.

Microwave Popcorn Arrives!

The next significant advancement for popcorn was the invention of the microwave.

Magnetrons, a technology produced by Raytheon Manufacturing Corporation for the military during World War II, were later used to develop microwave ovens. Percy Spencer the inventor of the microwave used popcorn as a primary experiment during the microwave’s development.

Words of Wisdom From Leonardo Da Vinci

Treat yourself to a little enlightenment with these beautiful and introspective Leonardo Da Vinci quotes.

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519), more commonly Leonardo da Vinci or simply Leonardo, was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance era.

He was a fascinating character of history whose vast areas of interest included invention, drawing, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography.

He has been variously called the father of paleontology, ichnology, and architecture, and he is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter, and tank, he epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal.

Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the “Universal Genius” or “Renaissance Man”, an individual of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”, and he is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history, and “his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, while the man himself mysterious and remote”

Oh yeah, he also painted arguably the most famous paintings in history….
