“I encountered this fox scavenging a Caribou’s carcass on the coastal plains of Alaska’s Arctic. I spent two hours slowly approaching it until I took this picture from six feet away, as she finished her meal. It was a surreal and unforgettable experience and a rare opportunity to be accepted into a wild animal’s existence for a few special hours”

“A wild Sumatran orangutan in Gunung Leuser National Park, in Northern Sumatra. This species is critically endangered according to the IUCN red list, due to habitat loss, as a consequence of palm oil exploitation and logging. Fewer than 3,500 orangutans still survive in the wild. We found this big male while hiking into the primary forest, and after initial mistrust, it became confident allowing me to take some wide-angle shots.”

Comic Feature – Rube Goldberg

Comic Feature – Rube Goldberg

Rube Goldberg was an inventor, an engineer, and a sculptor and multi-award-winning cartoonist who drew incredible and amusing contraptions. His Rube Goldberg machines live on to this day in physics classes and popular media. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 for his editorial cartoon “Peace Today which conveyed a warning against atomic weapons.

Rube Goldberg was born to Jewish parents on July 4, 1883 in San Fransisco. He began drawing at a young age, to such an extent that his parents arranged professional drawing lessons for him at the age of 11. His father encouraged him to study engineering and he earned a degree from the University of California in 1904. He took a job designing sewer pipes for the San Francisco Sewer Department

A few months later he became a sportswriter and cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Bulletin. He also briefly worked for the New York Evening Mail, creating three long-running comic strips. His most popular drawings depicted complex gadgets that performed even the simplest tasks in convoluted, elaborate ways, known as Rube Goldberg machines.

Rube was fascinated by the advancement of technology and thought it humorous as people either embraced change and the benefits technology brought or were reluctant as it seemingly increased dependency and laziness. He personally believed people preferred choosing a more difficult route instead of completing a goal simply and directly.

As he said, “the machines are a symbol of man’s capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results”

His inventions were interesting as he did the complete opposite of what most machines do – instead of making difficult things easy, he made easy things difficult. On his “Rube Goldberg Machine” work, he would spend over 30 hours on each piece with close attention to precision regarding the lines and details. n his cartoons, they were created by a character called Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts.

The National Cartoonists Society, in which Goldberg was the first president, named the Rueben Award in his honour, to recognize the “Cartoonist of the Year”.He also received several awards from the National Cartoonists Society including the Gold T-Square Award in 1955, the 1969 Rueben Award and the Gold Key Award, after his death in 1970. To further add to this list of accomplishments, he won the Banshee’s Silver Lady Award in 1959, he was a co-founder of the Famous Artists School , President of the Artists and Writers Club and a member of the Society of Illustrators. To this day high schools and universities worldwide, there are Rube Goldberg contests which challenge students to create intricate machines to do easy tasks

“I do not count the years. Tomorrow is just another day to create something I hope will be worthwhile.” Rube Goldberg

Words Of Wisdom – Bill Gates

Words Of Wisdom – Bill Gates

Words Of Wisdom – Bill Gates

Bill Gates is one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs, businessmen, and philanthropists. As the principal founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates is one of the most influential humans on the planet, a position he has used to help the world, it is estimated Gates and his wife Melinda have given away $28 billion via their charitable foundation – including $8 billion to improve global health.

As a teen at Lakeside Prep School, Gates wrote his first computer program on a General Electric computer. It was a version of tic-tac-toe where you could play against the machine. Once his school discovered Gates’ coding abilities, they let him write the school’s computer program for scheduling students in classes.

Along with fellow student Paul Allen, he began ditching class to work in the school’s computer room. Their work would soon pay off. When Gates was 15, he and Allen went into business together. The two teens netted $20,000 with Traf-O-Data, a program they developed to measure traffic flow in the Seattle area.

Gates scored a near-perfect 1590 out of 1600 on his SATs and was accepted to Harvard to study mathematics and computer science.. He left Harvard University in 1975 to fully devote himself to Microsoft with his childhood friend and fellow computer whiz Paul Allen.Their vision was their would be “a computer on every desktop and in every home”

The pair moved the company to Seattle in 1979, and that’s when Microsoft hit the big time. When Gates learned IBM was having trouble obtaining an operating system for its new PC, he bought an existing operating system from a small Seattle company for $50,000, developed it into MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), then licensed it to IBM. The genius of the IBM deal, masterminded by Gates, was that while IBM got MS-DOS, Microsoft retained the right to license it to other computer makers.

It was at Microsoft in 1987 he met product manager named Melinda French whom he fell and love with and married. In 1994, Bill and Melinda Gates established the William H. Gates Foundation, dedicated to supporting education, world health, and investment in low-income communities. Melinda Gates suggested that people should emulate the philanthropic efforts of the Salwen family, which had sold its home and given away half of its value, as detailed in The Power of Half In 2010Bill and Melinda Gates, and investor Warren Buffett signed a commitment they called the “Giving Pledge.” The pledge is a commitment by all three to donate at least half of their wealth over the course of time to charity.

In 2006, Gates announced he was transitioning himself from full-time work at Microsoft to devote more quality time to the foundation. In 2015, he gave $1 billion to a clean energy project, as he sees supporting new ‘greener’ technologies as a way to help deal with global warming. Asked about the motivation of his giving, Gates replied

““It doesn’t relate to any particular religion; it’s about human dignity and equality,” he says. “The golden rule that all lives have equal value and we should treat people as we would like to be treated.”

Curious Youth Discovers Efficient Solar Technology

Curious Youth Discovers Efficient Solar Technology

Curious Youth Discovers Efficient Solar Technology

In good news for our planet, Georgia Hutchinson, an innovative 13-year-old girl just created a genius way to allow solar panels that are able to generate more electricity by following the location of the sun from dawn until dusk.

Traditional solar panels are not only expensive, but they are also set up to point in only one direction. They are equipped with trackers but they can only follow the sun by moving along two different axis.

Curious about what a solar panels capabilities would be if it were able to follow the sun at all times, she borrowed an equation that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to find out. She discovered that a data-driven dual-axis solar trackers could reduce the payback period of investing in solar by up to 40% in some areas of the world using this equation.

This discovery just won her a $25,000 top prize in the National Broadcom MASTERS Competition, one of the most prestigious science and engineering competitions for middle schoolers in America. Over 2,500 young teenage scientists are considered for their experiments in STEM-related fields.

Paula Golden, President of the Broadcom said this about the contest, “ The Broadcom Foundation is honored to champion young scientists, engineers, and innovators and spur them on to greatness. These kids are exemplars of the quality work being done by middles schoolers with their teachers, mentors, and families throughout the US. The finalists are representative of special young people who are preparing themselves to solve the grand challenges we face through the world.”
