All About Art, Comics and Cartoons
Comic Feature – Richard Thompson
Richard Church Thompson (October 8, 1957 – July 27, 2016) was an American illustrator and cartoonist best known for his syndicated comic strip Cul de Sac distributed by Universal Press Syndicate to 150 worldwide and the illustrated poem “Make the Pie Higher”. He was given the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year for 2010.
Born in Baltimore on October 8, 1957. He was an avid reader from a young age and was particularly drawn to Winnie the Pooh and Dr. Seuss. Thompson continued his formal art education at Montgomery County Community College, although he dropped out prior to graduation, in 2004 the college would give him the Milton F. “Sonny” Clogg Alumni of the Year award.
In 1982, Thompson applied for a position at The Washington Post, which brought him to the attention of art director Francis Tanabe. Tanabe immediately hired him as a freelance artist, and the association would continue for nearly three decades. Thompson contributed regularly to both The Washington Post and The Washington Post Magazine and was the newspaper’s unofficial staff artist by 1985.
The weekly, watercolored incarnation of his comic Cul de Sac launched in The Washington Post Magazine on February 14, 2004. The strip focuses on a four-year-old girl, Alice Otterloop, and her daily life at preschool and at home. He also created the series Richard’s Poor Almanac is a cartoon series by Richard Thompson which ran in the Washington Post Style section from 1997 until his passing in 2016.
Upon learning that George W. Bush had opted not to invite an official poet to his inauguration ceremony in January 2001, Thompson composed his own poem from Bush malapropisms, and assembled them into a free-form verse entitled “Make the Pie Higher” The cartoon was widely circulated online over the next year, was set to music by multiple composers. Magical Squirrel Moments Caught On Camera
Award-winning photographer Geert Weegen photographing Red squirrels has captured some truly magical moments! Read on to find out how his studio started attracting wildlife in his own words below and see some of his amazing and adorable photographs in the slideshow below.
“Six years ago, there was a fox standing on my doorstep, and I immediately rushed back inside to fetch some meat. The fox would come back daily to get more food and I used that as an opportunity to take some photos.
By the end of a second week, the fox would come to the balcony where it interacted with various props I used for photography. Soon before late, a Russian bird paid me a visit and continued on doing so daily. Suddenly, my balcony had become a studio filled with nature props, cameras, mirrors etc. The bird followed me and I followed the bird with my camera, as it searched for hidden food in scenes that I had created. Some photos of this encounter were awarded and published.” Geert Weegen

World Records
World’s Largest Knitting Needles
Having a cozy knit item like a scarf or toque can be one of winter’s most loved possessions. In this Guinness World Record, meet Elizabeth Bond, an art student living in the UK who holds the record for largest knitting needles which measure in at 4.42 m (14 ft 6.33 in) long and have a diameter of 9.01 cm (3.54 in)
PHOTO CREDIT: GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
Betsy created the needles as a part of her final major project at Wiltshire College, where she was studying Art and Design. She wanted to focus on a textiles project, and felt knitting would be a great addition.
Having already been used to bigger knits by using lightweight broomsticks, she decided to take it up a notch by making the world’s biggest needles The concept behind the needles installation was to open a conversation about crafts, and traditional skills that are passed on through generations.
“Everyone’s got potential. Nothing can stop anyone I don’t think, If you truly believe you can do it. Just keep striving, just keep pushing forward. Give it a go – what’s the worst that could happen?” Elizabeth Bond SOURCE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
“At Guinness World Records we want to show that everyone in the world is the best at something, and we’re here to measure it!”
