One Million Gardeners Unite To Protect Bees and Butterflies

One Million Gardeners Unite To Protect Bees and Butterflies

Over 1 million homeowners and gardeners from around the world have joined the fight to save dwindling pollinator populations – and you can join the team too.

The National Pollinator Garden Network has surpassed their goal of registered pollinator gardens with just over 1,040,000 gardens now registered with their Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.

Though most of the registered pollinator gardens are in the United States, the ambitious project has also recruited members in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. The registered spaces, most of which are comprised of private yards and public gardens, all add up to a network of approximately 5 million acres of enhanced or new pollinator habitat.

According to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), one of the project’s partnering organizations, protecting pollinators is crucial to our food supply.

“Together, through collaborative conservation we are restoring pollinator populations that provide the foundation of our ecosystems and our food supply,” said NWF CEO Collin O’Mara. “When we save wildlife, we save ourselves.”

Want To Join?

In order to contribute to the network, gardeners are asked to plant large amounts of pollinator-friendly plants and wild grasses that are both native and non-invasive species. The space should also offer breaks from the wind, exposure to direct sunlight, a watering source, and a minimized amount of pesticides.

Robotics Students Come Through For Child In Need

Cillian Jackson was born with a genetic defect that has left him with impaired motor function. Prior to December, the youngster either had to be carried in a stroller or in his parents’ arms.

When Cillian’s parents started looking for ways to give their son more mobility, they found that motorized wheelchairs can cost thousands of dollars, and their insurance would not be able to cover the costs due to Cillian’s age.

The parents got creative and Cillian’s dad reached out to his old high school’s robotics team and asked for their help. The Rogue Robotics team at Farmington High School has won multiple awards for their ingenuity; so when they were faced with a project that could make a difference in the life of a 2-year-old boy, they did not hesitate to accept the challenge.

“I think we won here more than we do in our competitions,” one high school student said. Another team member said: “Instead of completing a task, we’re helping change someone’s life.”

Train Driver Returns Elderly Woman’s Lost Money

Train Driver Returns Elderly Woman’s Lost Money

A woman who left behind a purse with $1,300 in birthday cash on a light-rail transit train says she can barely believe someone was honest enough to return it.

Li Feng Yang had just received the money for her 75th birthday and was planning to deposit it in the bank. She was taking the train to see her doctor last week when she dropped the bag on the seat beside her.

Yang realized she’d forgotten it immediately after she got off the train in downtown Calgary and the doors closed. “A rush of burning anxiety immediately came in,” she said in a statement translated by her grandson, Kai Huang.

Yang, who does not speak English, met a Chinese-speaking man by the train station. He helped her call Calgary Transit and took her to the lost property office.

Train operator Mesfin Tadese found the bag during a walk-through when the train was at the end of the line and called the office to say he’d found the bag. He handed it off to the next driver to take to the lost and found.

The next morning, Yang received word that her bag, which also contained her cellphone and bank card, had been found. She went with her son to retrieve it.

She said she was surprised and “very happy, very grateful. It was hard to believe what I see. Is there really honest people that would return my lost bag with cash in it?” she said through Huang. “Well, the undeniable truth is in front of me.”

Yang thanked Tadese in person on Tuesday. She brought him two bouquets of flowers and embraced him at a downtown train station.

“I never thought it’s a big deal like this.” Tadese said he was just doing his job. “I’m happy to see the original owner and give back the purse. I never thought it’s a big deal like this.”

WORDS OF WISDOM – PRINCESS DIANA

WORDS OF WISDOM – PRINCESS DIANA

Words Of Wisdom – Princess Diana

There can truly never be enough said about Princess Diana, a beautiful soul who inspired compassion around the world.

She was the revolutionary Princess who surprised the world by using her royal fame and influence tor to shine a light on people, animals, and causes in need. In fact, Diana was an active supporter of over 100 charities during her lifetime,

Her natural sympathy and oneness with patients were much admired, she helped bring awareness, understanding and destigmatize both aids and leprosy. In 1987, Princess Diana was one of the first well-known celebrities to be photographed with someone battling AIDS. An extremely important moment n changing attitudes to the disease.

Diana famously noted, “HIV does not make people dangerous to know. You can shake their hands and give them a hug. Heaven knows they need it.”

In January 1997, she famously walked through a former minefield during her International Campaign to Ban Landmines and drew attention to the lack of prostheses for victims. After her death, the Ottawa treaty was signed banning the use of anti-personnel landmines. Many agree that her support and role in the campaign played an important role in influencing this decision and she was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

And so with 2019 upon us, may Princess Diana’s compassionate words of wisdom shine on us all.

The Cat Nap Volunteer

The Cat Nap Volunteer

The Cat Nap Volunteer

A man in Wisconsin has turned to snooze into a charitable act.

Terry Lauerman, 75, goes to his local animal shelter in Green Bay every day and takes naps with its cats.

Though, that’s not quite his intention.

According to Elizabeth Feldhausen, the founder of Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary, Lauerman strolled into the shelter about six months ago with a simple dream and a cat brush in tow.

“He just walked in and started brushing,” Feldhausen told HuffPost on Thursday, noting that he never asked to be a volunteer. “So eventually we told him he was an official volunteer and had him fill out our volunteer form.”

Feldhausen said Lauerman visits the cage-free sanctuary — which rescues disabled cats that would be at risk of euthanasia at other facilities — daily and stays for about three hours.

After he grooms a cat for a bit, he typically dozes off.

“[He sleeps for] about an hour, then he’ll wake up and switch cats,” said Feldhausen.

Apparently, Lauerman really enjoys the unpaid gig a lot — especially the sprucing aspect of it.

“He said, [the brushing is] as great of an experience for him, as it is for them,” Feldhausen said.

Naturally, the volunteer with a habit of accidentally passing out charmed the staff at Safe Haven, and the group decided to dedicate a Facebook post to him on Tuesday.

“We are so lucky to have a human like Terry,” the shelter wrote, alongside a few photos of Lauerman cat napping with felines. “Terry just came along one day and introduced himself. He said he’d like to brush cats. Eventually, it became everyday. He brushes all of the cats, and can tell you about all of their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most days. We don’t mind – Cats need this! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.”

Ends up the staff at the shelter weren’t the only ones smitten by Lauerman. As of Thursday afternoon, the post has received over 1.6 million on Facebook. It also made its way over to Reddit, where it has received hundreds of comments.

And although Lauerman hopes his 15 minutes of fame leads to more donations to Safe Haven, he also wants to remind people that he’s not the only person dedicating his time to shelter.

Feldhausen said that Lauerman specifically praised another volunteer named Paula.

“Who is what he considers the cat grandma,” Feldhausen said. “He wants to make sure the people who do what he does every day get credit too.”

Comic Feature – Mark Parisi

Off The Mark is a comic panel created by Mark Parisi which began in 1987 and now appears in 100 newspapers. It also appears on greeting cards, in magazines, on T-shirts and more. Off The Mark is distributed daily by Andrews McMeel Universal.

Parisi began drawing when he was very young, and frequently copied comic strips out of newspapers. Parisi said that after reading Charles Schulz’ comic strip Peanuts, he “immediately wanted to draw it.”

After many odd jobs and a graphic design degree from Salem State College, Mark felt he had two marketable skills: cartooning and grocery bagging. He decided to choose cartooning, even though it didn’t pay as well. With influences ranging from Charles Schulz, MAD Magazine and, more obviously, Gary Larson, he started self-syndicating his off the mark comic panel in 1987.

The humour of this comic panel focuses on off-beat, slice-of-life situations. Andrews McMeel Universal describes it as: “A world of scheming pets, evil computers, and talking plants that puts an ironic, absurd or just plain silly spin on everyday life.”

Off The Mark was named “Best Newspaper Panel” by the National Cartoonists Society in 2008, and again in 2011. It was also nominated in 2004, 2006, 2013, and 2016. Off The Mark greeting cards were named “Best Greeting Cards” by the National Cartoonists Society in 2013. Mark is still drawing hilarious comics as well as put out a book series for kids called Marty Pants. SOURCE WIKIPEDIA, OFF THE MARK,

Words of Wisdom- Amelia Earhart

Words of Wisdom- Amelia Earhart

Words of Wisdom- Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was an incredible human and American aviator who set many flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation.

She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland during a flight to circumnavigate the globe. And just for fun she went on design clothes and to become a faculty consultant at Purdue University.

Born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24, 1897 she defied traditional gender roles from a young age. Earhart played basketball, took an auto repair course and briefly attended college. During World War I, she served as a Red Cross nurse’s aid in Toronto, Canada. Earhart began to spend time watching pilots in the Royal Flying Corps train at a local airfield while in Toronto.

She started flying lessons with female flight instructor Neta Snook in 1921 and later that year, she purchased her first airplane, a secondhand Kinner Airster. She nicknamed the yellow airplane “the Canary.” Her first record came in 1922 when she became the first woman to fly solo above 14,000 feet. Earhart consistently worked to promote opportunities for women in aviation

In 1937, Earhart attempted to fly around the world, and her plane disappeared that year. Her legacy continues to inspire pilots of all genders today, and her bravery proved that women (and men) can do whatever they set their minds to. Earhart’s story is still taught to schoolchildren today. SOURCE REFINERY29, WIKIPEDIA, HISTORY

Bob Ross: Words Of Wisdom

Bob Ross: Words Of Wisdom

Words Of Wisdom – Bob Ross

Bob Ross, the painter, and television personality was an endearing, soothing, and extremely prolific artist who purportedly completed 30,000 paintings during his lifetime. What made this especially likable and talented painter truly different is that he truly believed that all of us could also be artists.

Ross’s gentle voice and warm demeanor captured the hearts of humans of all ages and artists of all levels worldwide. Bob spent 20 years in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of master sergeant before transitioning into the happy painter we know today. He is quoted as saying “after yelling so much in the Air Force; he never wanted to yell at anyone again.”

As Robert Frost famously said “Way leads unto Way” and the Alaskan Mountains where he was stationed became iconic features in his paintings. While stationed there Ross indulged his creative side by painting his landscapes onto golden pans, which he sold for $25 each. Today, they can fetch as much as $7500 on eBay.

One of Bob Ross’s biggest influences was a German painter named Bill Alexander who hosted an art instruction show on PBS “The Magic of Oil Painting. He shared his “wet-on-wet” oil painting technique. Ross ended up studying under Alexander, who became his mentor in the early 1980s, and as Alexander was preparing to retire, he asked Ross to take over teaching his painting classes. Ross agreed and set out to tour the country on his own in a motor home, traveling and teaching people.

One of his students Annette Kowalski recognized his gentle and powerful positivity while taking a five-day instructional course with Ross in 1982. She became Ross’s manager, helping him broker the deal for The Joy of Painting television show with PBS. Despite its incredible popularity Bob Ross did the series for free, while his income came from Bob Ross Inc. which sold art supplies and how-to videotapes, taught classes, and even had a troupe of traveling art instructors who roamed the world teaching painting.

It’s been nearly 25 years since the sincere, gentle and very talented Bob Ross passed. His encouraging artistic mentor style continues to spread smiles and inspiration to artists of all ages. Below is just a few of some of his many magical quotes and a classic clip from his show. SOURCES MENTAL FLOSS, WIKIPEDIA & BIOGRAPHY
